We are extremely excited to announce the release of our 2010 Sixties Block! One of our most exciting new wines in recent years, the 2010 vintage is a colourful blend of shiraz, tempranillo, graciano, tinta cao, souzao and carignan.
Few wine lovers have ever had the chance to try some of these varieties on their own, let alone as part of a complex blend like this and, to cap it all off, each variety has been sourced from 50-year-old vines.
The Sixties Block story
“Planted by my brother Malcolm in the early 1960’s, our ‘Sixties Block’ contains a single row of many obscure & interesting grape varieties. Today this mature vineyard produces small quantities of intensely flavoured fruit, from which we select the very best for this intriguing blend.” Colin Campbell
The wine is named after our ‘Sixties Block’, a small vineyard that was established by Malcolm Campbell during the early 1960s specifically for new and experimental grape varieties. Since then, the ‘Sixties Block’ has been home to many successful trials. To this day it contains many obscure and interesting grape varieties producing small quantities of intensely flavoured fruit, from which we select the very best for this intriguing blend.
The blend for The Sixties Block may vary from year to year, with the vineyard and winemaking teams working closely together each season to identify the most promising parcels of fruit. Once in the winery, the highest quality parcels are then carefully selected and blended to create the desired balance, texture and flavour.
The 2010 vintage
The 2010 release is our third vintage of the ‘Sixties Block’ and boasts a dark plum colour, with a vibrant nose of mulberry and plum. Flavours develop across the palate with earthy, undergrowth characters combining with the fruit to provide a complex and interesting palate. The wine comes together with fresh acidity and supple natural tannin to provide a lingering, balanced finish. Although it will continue to develop over the next five to six years, the 2010 release is drinking very well now – try it with veal meatballs in puttanesca sauce or cacciatore sausage.
