Campbells is an official Red 5 star winery in the 2011 Wine Companion!

Monday, August 02, 2010

Campbells produces a wide range of table and fortified wines of ascending quality and price, which are always honest. As so often happens in this part of the world, the fortified wines are the best, with the extremely elegant Isabella Rare Tokay and Merchant Prince Rare Muscat at the top of the tree; the winery rating is for the fortified wines. A feature of the Vintage Room at the cellar door is an extensive range of back vintage releases of small parcels of wine not available through any other outlet, other than to Cellar Club members. Exports to the UK, the US and other major markets.

Isabella Rare Rutherglen Tokay NV
Very deep olive-brown; broodingly complex, deep and concentrated aromas, then layer upon layer of flavour in the mouth, of almost syrupy consistency. Incredibly intense and complex, with the varietal tea-leaf/muscadelle fruit continuity. 375 ml. Cork.
18% alc. Rating 97 Drink 2011 $110 Date Tasted Jan 10

Merchant Prince Rare Rutherglen Muscat NV
Dark brown, with olive-green on the rim; particularly fragrant, with essency, raisiny fruit; has an almost silky viscosity to the intense flavours which flood every corner of the mouth, but yet retains elegance. 375 ml. Cork.
18% alc. Rating 96 Drink 2011 $110 Date Tasted Jan 10

The Barkly Rutherglen Durif 2007
Deeper colour than the Limited Release, although the hue is similar; likewise, distinctly richer and riper, but is not jammy or over the top. Great example of full-bodied durif. Cork.
14.5% alc. Rating 94 Drink 2020 $42.80 Date Tasted Feb 10

The Brothers Rutherglen Shiraz 2006
A new flagship wine featuring Colin (winemaker) and brother Malcolm (viticulturist). Excellent purple-crimson; this supple, medium-bodied wine is a cut above any previous Campbell red, with immaculate fruit, oak and tannin balance. Quality Cork.
14.5% alc. Rating 94 Drink 2021 $60.70 Date Tasted Jan 10

Grand Rutherglen Tokay NV
Olive mahogany; much, much more complex than the Classic, with all the key varietal characteristics enhanced by rancio; the palate is very long, and has no stale characters whatsoever. 375 ml. Cork.
17.5% alc. Rating 94 Drink 2011 $65 Date Tasted Jan 10

Grand Rutherglen Muscat NV
Full olive-brown; highly aromatic; a rich and complex palate is silky smooth, supple and long, the strong raisin fruit balanced by the clean, fresh, lingering acid (and spirit) cut on the finish. 375 ml. Cork.
17.5% alc. Rating 94 Drink 2011 $65 Date Tasted Jan 10

Bobbie Burns Rutherglen Shiraz 2008
Bright, clear red-purple; an elegant wine, a far cry from the 16% alcohol Bobbie Burns wines of bygone days; has a mix of supple, perfectly ripe, plum (mainly) and blackberry fruit, oak and tannins both balanced and integrated. Screwcap.
14.5% alc. Rating 93 Drink 2023 $22.95 Date Tasted Jan 10

Liquid Gold Classic Rutherglen Tokay NV
Medium brown; has clear-cut varietal character on both the bouquet and palate, with tea leaf, toffee and cake flavours; a delicious balance between youth and full maturity; doesn't cloy. 500 ml. Cork.
17.5% alc. Rating 93 Drink 2011 $34.60 Date Tasted Feb 10

Rutherglen Tokay NV
Bright, light golden-brown; classic mix of tea-leaf and butterscotch aromas lead into an elegant wine which dances in the mouth; has balance and length. 375 ml. Cork.

Classic Rutherglen Muscat NV
Spicy/raisiny complexity starting to build; a large increase in intensity and length over the Rutherglen Muscat. 500 ml. Cork.
