Celebrating 140 Years of Family Winemaking

On Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd March, we were delighted to host some of our closest media and industry friends to celebrate 140 years of family winemaking and 40 consecutive years of Bobbie Burns Shiraz. It was an honour to have some of Australia’s most respected wine writers with us for two days to share in this special milestone.

Over the two days, we took our minds back: from first generation of Campbells who started the dream, to the second and third who worked hard to keep it going in tough times, the fourth generation who developed it into the Campbells we know and love today, and now the fifth generation who is adding fresh ideas and energy to lead us into the future.

One of the highlights of the celebration was delving into a 40-year retrospective tasting of our best known table wine, Bobbie Burns Shiraz. We explored how the wine has evolved over the past four decades with continued experimentation and innovation, technological advancement in winemaking and changing consumer tastes. We were delighted to see that many vintages are still showing outstanding longevity including the ‘75, ‘78, ‘83, ‘88, ‘93 and ‘96 to name a few.

Inspired by his recent trip to Japan, Michael Ryan of Provenance, Beechworth, crafted an amazing Japanese-inspired menu to showcase some of the treasures from our cellar at our celebratory dinner. We were truly impressed with his creativity and daring and are proud to have been able to treat our guests to such a special dinner from one of North-East Victoria’s very talented chefs.

The 140th Anniversary celebrations also provided the opportunity to look toward the future and in keeping with this we showcased our latest addition to the Campbells range - the 2009 ‘Sixties Block’. The ‘Sixites Block’ is a result of the experimentation and innovation that has always been an important part of our tradition. It is named after the experimental vineyard, known as the Sixties Block, where Malcolm and Colin began trials with over 40 interesting table wine varieties as far back as the 1960s. The 2009 vintage is a blend of shiraz, tempranillo, graciano, tinta cao, souzao and carignan.

Our step back in time has been an interesting and inspiring one and we look forward to seeing what the next 140 years has in store for our family, our wines and the Campbells team.
