Happy Birthday Bobbie - 40 this year!
A richly fruited fellow with dense blueberry, blackcurrant and plum fruit. Juicy and approachable with a velvet tannin coat.

Remarkably, this release of the Bobbie Burns Shiraz is the 40th Anniversary release. Great history the Campbell family are in the midst of creating.

This release is bang on. It was a hot, torrid vintage but they’ve come out of it with flying colours. Chicory, raspberry, sweet blueberries and iodine. Gorgeous fleshiness. Warmth. Juicy finish. Smoky aftertaste. I’d treat it as a ‘drink now’ and I mean that in the best possible way – because it’s a beautiful drink right now.

Celebrating 40 consecutive vintages of Bobbie Burns Shiraz

Table winemaking in Australia has a relatively short history when compared to other regions in the world, so it is a significant feat when a single Australian wine can claim 40 consecutive vintages.

The 2009 vintage of Campbells’ best known table wine, Bobbie Burns Shiraz, marks such a milestone and illustrates the development of premium table-winemaking at Campbells and in the Rutherglen region.

Over the past four decades, the wine has evolved as a result of continued experimentation and innovation, technological advancement in winemaking and changing consumer tastes.

Campbells Winemaker Colin Campbell says: “With such a long history, we receive a lot of favourable feedback from people who have fond memories of ‘cutting their teeth’ on Bobbie Burns Shiraz and many still have a few bottles stashed away from years gone by.”

“Despite the plethora of table wines in the marketplace today, sales of Bobbie Burns continue to grow year on year demonstrating the wine’s continued relevance and popularity,” Colin said.

All 40 vintages of Bobbie Burns Shiraz were tasted recently and Colin and his brother, viticulturist Malcolm, were delighted. All wines showed different levels of development, were still sound with the older ones still showing fruit flavour; demonstrating the great ageing quality of Bobbie Burns Shiraz. The vintages from 2004 onwards shone with notable consistency and quality - testament to the innovation and improvements in viticulture and winemaking that this wine has seen over its history.

Over its 40-year history, what has remained constant with Bobbie Burns Shiraz is Malcolm and Colin Campbell’s focused approach - to grow the best possible shiraz and use winemaking techniques that enhance the natural fruit flavours in the wine.

Of the latest 2009 vintage, Colin adds: “Given the significance of the 40th consecutive vintage, the pressure was on to make a great wine. Fortunately the vintage conditions were favourable and delivered fruit with an abundance of flavour and tannin in balance. So we were careful to simply enhance this fruit quality in the winery.”

Each vintage, subtle oak maturation in carefully selected premium French and American oak barrels allows the wine to gently develop soft tannins and balanced complexity. This complements the natural, full fruit flavours of Bobbie Burns Shiraz. The result is a distinctive and long-lived Shiraz, which demonstrates the capacity of the Rutherglen region, and the 2009 vintage is no exception.
