DESCRIPTION

Tasting Notes

Mahogany. Complex aromas of candied fruits, quince paste, toffee and cold tea.

Grand Rutherglen Topaque Tasting Note

Wine Making

The grapes are left until late in the season to achieve optimum ripeness, ensuring maximum fruit flavour and a high degree of natural sweetness. Juice is fermented for only a very short time before being fortified with neutral spirit. Only selected parcels of premium fruit are then added to the Grand Rutherglen Topaque solera. The wine that provides the basis of this blend dates back to the 1950’s. Wine can only be withdrawn from this solera when it matches exactly with the previous withdrawal thus ensuring the quality and consistency of style.

Cellaring

Blended through our solera for optimum flavour and balance this wine will not improve with further cellaring and should ideally be enjoyed soon after opening. Perfect with fresh fruit, sticky date pudding or freshly brewed coffee and fine chocolates.

Technical

The Grapes: Muscadelle from Campbells Rutherglen vineyards.
Alcohol: 17.5%

The late Colin Campbell was a strong advocate for the change of name from Tokay (now protected) to Topaque. His daughters, Julie and Jane, continue to do him and Topaque proud with a seriously good rendition of the muscadelle grape that explores both its rich, luscious side as well as a fresh, grapey immediacy, melded together cleanly by neutral spirit. Delicious, concentrated malt-toffee, raisins, roasted nuts, honey cake, dried fruits and burnt butter. Lasts so, so long. 375ml. - Jeni Port - 96 points

"Topaque is about elegance and poise. Here it is multiplied by age and winemaker skill to reveal both delicacy and concentration. It's a fine tightrope walked and mastered here, with its lifted aromatics, freshness and utter deliciousness in dark malt biscuit, dried dates, fruit cake, butterscotch and nutty rancio qualities. And so, so smooth. Very special. 375ml." - Jeni Port - 96 points

"Grapes left on the vine till late in the season for optimum ripeness/sweetness. Fermentation arrested by neutral spirit. Selected parcels added to the Grand Rutherglen Topaque solera system. Base wine dates back to 1950s. Burnished walnut colour. A laid-back approach, mellow even, with luscious sweetness tempered by cold-tea notes in tandem with raisined fruit, chocolate panforte and toasted nuts. So much here: layer upon layer of flavour that fills all senses. But that balance of clean spirit keeps things tight and fresh. So much class on display. 375ml." - Jeni Port - 96 points
