Merchant Prince Rare Rutherglen Muscat Tasting Note

Wine Making

The grapes are left late in the season to achieve optimum ripeness, ensuring maximum fruit flavour and a high degree of natural sweetness. Only selected parcels of premium fruit made to the strictest criteria can be added to the Rare Rutherglen Muscat solera. Wine can only be withdrawn from this solera when it matches exactly with the previous withdrawal thus ensuring the quality and consistency of style. As with any blended wine, it is difficult to specify an exact age. The oldest base wine is well over 70 years old, with only wines of the highest standard from excellent vintages being added to this outstanding solera.

Cellaring

Blended through our solera for optimum flavour and balance this wine will not improve with further cellaring and should ideally be enjoyed soon after opening. The perfect partner with coffee and petit fours or the richest chocolate. However to fully appreciate the intensity and myriad of flavours that linger long on the palate, we recommend enjoying it on its own.

Technical

The Grapes: Muscat a petit grains rouge (locally known as Rutherglen Brown Muscat) from Campbells Rutherglen vineyards.
Alcohol: 18.0%

Palate:

The ultimate in intensity. Raisined sweetness explodes on the front of the palate. Complex nutty flavours flow through the full length of the palate and the drying tannin finish lingers for many minutes. Merchant Prince Rare Rutherglen Muscat Tasting Note

The base wine for this extraordinary fortified is more than 70 years old. It pours in slow motion into the glass, deep amber-brown in colour. It lusciously, luxuriously reveals itself slowly – it has time on its side – with an intense scent and flavour rich in coffee, caramel toffee, chocolate panforte, hazelnut, fig, quince paste and fruit peel. You are tasting history, a rare experience, indeed. 375ml. - Jeni Port - 99 points

"The oldest base wine is more than 70 years old. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience (or more, if possible!) that displays the fortified winemaker's great art so beautifully, with enviable refinement and elegance. It is both luscious and multi-faceted in flavours. The house style brings deep pockets of the most delicious spice to enliven plum pudding, burnt fig, salted caramel, nougat with a chocolate-covered almond nuttiness. Infinite charm. 375ml."- Jeni Port - 99 points

"Mesmerising! Merchant Prince is one of the most complex tasting experiences you can have. Such is the depth and age of Campbells fortified stocks; few producers can compete. Dense, deep in colour and super-concentrated, Merchant Prince seems to pour in slow motion. Molasses, dried fruits, soaked raisins and toasted nuts meld and weave their way through the palate, rising in sweet intensity. Clean pair of heels to close. A fortified masterclass. 375ml." - Jeni Port - 97 points
