The Barkly Durif 2019 Tasting Note

Wine Making

The 2019 release is an excellent example of what we strive to achieve with this iconic Rutherglen variety. Select parcels of premium fruit were fermented on skins in closed fermenters for ten days and aged in new to 3 year old French puncheons for 27 months.

Cellaring

Enjoy now as a new release wine with a juicy rare rib eye fillet steak, or slow cooked oxtail pie and creamed potatoes. A smooth and elegant wine that will reward careful cellaring and will drink well from now until 2032.

Technical

The Grapes: Durif from 45 year old vines in our Silverburn vineyard.
Date Tasted: June 2024
Alcohol: 14.9%
T.A (g/l): 6.3g/l
pH: 3.50pH

Full medium red. Juicy ripe black plum fruit, with lifted violets supported by lightly charred oak.

Palate:

Ripe black plums of medium weight with a smooth and supple mid palate. Fine ripe tannins are controlled and beautifully balanced by subtle oak integration for a lengthy finish. The Barkly Durif 2019 Tasting Note

Stately, dare I suggest, majestic? The Barkly goes further, dares to dream bigger than most durif on offer. In the hands of a durif producer of note, the result is confident and a little daring. This is a wine both for long-term cellaring and, for those who dare, today, combining deep-seated black fruit intensity, a kitchen pantry of spices, woodsmoke, earth, chocolate panforte and more, tied tightly by ripe, firm tannins. No apologies here; there's a lot to sink the teeth into. - 96 points
