Wow, what a year!
I jumped head first into the role of Vineyard Manager during vintage this year and what an amazing time it’s been! Originating from North East Victoria, I have travelled Australia over the years and landed vineyard roles in Margaret River and Yarra Valley. While it’s amazing to have had these experiences, it’s nice to settle back into the Rutherglen region and get back to my roots.
When it comes to the vineyards, Campbell’s philosophy really resonates with me and is one I follow every day – “Quality at the expense of quantity is our aim. We assist nature, we don’t seek to dominate her.” Great wine really does begin on the vine and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in Campbell’s 152 year old heritage, alongside Jane and Jules.
The warmer weather is well and truly here in Rutherglen, and with that comes new and exciting happenings in the vineyard. With sustainability at the forefront of our minds at Bernie Campbells, we are always looking to improve our carbon footprint. Currently, we are working on improving our composted grape marc to give back valuable nutrients and organic matter when spread in the vineyard.
This year we are planting a new Shiraz block, there is also a small block that we are looking to plant with a new and exciting variety – stay tuned!
At the heart of the winery, our cellar door is gearing up for a busy couple of months ahead. With some new and delicious wines being released, you have the opportunity to sip, savour and chat to our friendly cellar door team. Of course, the perfect way to finish your tasting is with a cheese platter under the oaks on our front lawn. Take in the sights and the sounds of our unique family run winery.
From the team here at Campbells, to your family, here’s cheers to an amazing year and we hope you have a safe and happy festive season.
